Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation Youth Programs

Youth Director: Bret Straffon

Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation hosts several youth fishing programs, all overseen by Youth Director. The programs give youth from 6th grade to college age opportunities to participate in youth clubs, fishing programs and tournament competition.

Programs include the Junior Bassmaster clubs, High School Division and the College Division, all of which are completely separate programs with different requirements, benefits and opportunities. Each program presently provides opportunities to advance and/or participate in national B.A.S.S. Nation events. See each individual program page for more information.

Our Youth Need Adult Boater Volunteers

By volunteering as a Boat Captain you are helping the growth of Youth Bass Fishing and sustaining the sport we all love, joining thousands of Captains throughout the United States. The button below takes adult Boat Captain volunteers to an external form where you can sign up you and your boat for one of our Junior or High School teams on the tournament day(s) listed during the sign-up process. MBN-Youth Division will share your information with Junior or High School Anglers who want to compete, but are unable to find a Boat Captain/boat for a given tournament.

Boat Captains do not fish during any sanctioned MBN-Youth tournament. Typically, our youth anglers will pay their Boat Captain for your time, gas, etc. As Boat Captain, it is totally up to you to determine how much the anglers should pay you. Please discuss payment with the youth anglers prior to confirming that you will boat for them rather than tournament day.

Junior Bassmasters

Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation Junior Bassmaster logo-smallThe Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation (MBN) Junior Bassmasters youth fishing program has existed a long time. Primarily recommended for youth anglers from 6th to 8th grade who are not eligible yet for High School fishing though other grades may be members too, up to each individual club. Jr. Bassmaster clubs are generally named after their affiliated adult bass club though they can be named anything, and do not have to be directly affiliated with a specific adult club.

See the Junior Bassmasters page for more information including How to Start a Youth Club, membership requirements and a link to an active clubs list. Jr. Bassmaster clubs generally have club activities including tournaments, and Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation hosts an annual Jr. State Championship for all eligible Jr. Bassmaster members. Eligible qualifiers may also advance to the Bassmaster Jr. National Championship!

High School Division

Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation High School logo-smallThe MBN High School Division is for anglers in High School from grades 9 through 12. Clubs are formed within each individual High School with as few as two members and a mentor. The High School fishing program is all done with 2-angler teams who provide their own adult boater.

See the High School page for more information including How to Start a Youth Club, membership requirements and a link to an active High School clubs list. High School clubs generally have club activities including tournaments, and Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation hosts an annual High School State Championship for all eligible High School team members.

Additional opportunities for High School fishing teams include the MBN High School Team Trail at the state level, and the B.A.S.S. High School Nation Opens at the national level. Each of these high school bass tournament events/circuits provide possible advancement to the annual B.A.S.S. High School Nation Championship!

College Division

Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation College DivisionThe College Division is for anglers in college. There will be clubs formed within each individual college. These clubs can also become Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation adult clubs as long as they have at least 6 members. This could make the college team members eligible to fish our annual State Championship (visit the page for details).

See the College page for more information including fishing opportunities, membership requirements and information on how to also become eligible to fish our adult State Championship! Additional fishing opportunities for college team anglers include the national Bassmaster College Series and the Bassmaster College Series National Championship! One college angler can also qualify to fish the Bassmaster Classic!
